Challenge no. 09

#09: Health accident alert system for elderly care institutions

Challenge description:

One of the most perspective robotics usages is nursing services. The society is getting older and the number of persons, who need some assistance or are in danger of sudden health issues increases. Nursing robots at the moment are not fully ready or are too expensive to be used by everyone. While existing technologies are cheaper and can be used for human heath condition monitoring. The indicated or event predicted accidents could be alerted and needed help could be called immediately.

This challenge invites to generate ideas on how sound and video analysis can be used to determine some home accidents, such as human fall, stumble, etc. This could be a solution for elderly care institutions, where patient do not agree to wear additional digital devices, but some surveillance infrastructure can be supported. The system could immediately alert staff about a potential accident, thus improving response time and providing necessary assistance.

While developing the ideas, consider not only the technical implementation of the system, but possibilities to identify different health threatening or dangerous situations. Multi-modal options, additional sensors can be proposed to achieve more accurate situation analysis.
