RTU Launches MERIT Master’s Program for Future Leaders

Riga Technical University (RTU) has launched a new master’s program, the Master of Management of Smart, Resilient, and Interconnected Systems (MERIT). This program is designed to equip professionals with technical expertise and strategic management skills. It was developed by RTU’s Faculty of Computer Science, Information Technology, and Energy in collaboration with Riga Business School (RBS).

The growing complexity of modern industries—where systems, data-driven decision-making, and cybersecurity play critical roles—was the driving force behind the creation of MERIT. In today’s digital era, businesses seek professionals who can oversee digital transformation, manage large-scale IT projects, and ensure the effective implementation of new technologies. The MERIT program aims to prepare students for leadership roles in public administration, healthcare, professional services, and manufacturing.

Key Highlights of the MERIT Program:
  • The MERIT program integrates specialized fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and data security with essential business management areas like innovation management and entrepreneurship.
  • Students can choose from four distinctive tracks, allowing them to tailor their degrees to their future careers:
    • Public Administration – Focuses on the digital transformation of public services.
    • Professional Services – Develops a data-driven mindset to optimize business operations.
    • Healthcare – Emphasizes the use of data and technology to improve patient outcomes.
    • Non-IT Manufacturing – Focuses on innovation in manufacturing through data analytics and automation technologies.
  • The program offers both in-person and remote lectures to accommodate diverse learning preferences. All lectures are conducted in English and are scheduled only on weekday evenings.

One of the defining features of the MERIT program is its strong industry connections. Students gain hands-on experience by working with industry leaders, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and digital innovation hubs. This exposure allows them to tackle real-world challenges and engage with emerging technologies. Additionally, participants benefit from guest lectures, industry partnerships, and practical case studies. The program also offers valuable networking opportunities with European and global industry professionals, setting MERIT graduates apart in the job market.

The European Union’s Digital Europe Program provided a unique opportunity for students enrolling in MERIT. European citizens who applied by January 2025 had the chance to enroll tuition-free.

Professor Agris Ņikitenko, Dean of RTU’s Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, highlighted the uniqueness of the MERIT program, stating:

“Unlike traditional MBA programs, this program offers a specialized blend of technical expertise and strategic management skills. This unique combination equips graduates with the competencies needed to step into high-level management roles, such as Chief Information Officer (CIO), where both technical knowledge and business acumen are essential for success.”

The next group of students will be admitted in September 2025, more information can be found here: https://rbs.lv/lv/merit/
