The Master of Science in Smart, Secure, Interconnected Systems (MERIT) programme, which comprises four new master’s programmes alongside an updated one, recognizes this demand and focuses on equipping students with in-demand expertise in three key domains: Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cybersecurity (CS), and the Internet of Things (IoT).

To solidify this commitment, MERIT maps its curriculum to the European Skills, Competences, Qualifications and Occupations (ESCO) framework.


What is ESCO?

Developed by the European Commission, ESCO provides a common language for skills, competencies, qualifications, and occupations across Europe. By classifying these elements in a standardized way, ESCO facilitates communication and understanding between job seekers, employers, education and training providers, and policymakers.


How does MERIT align with ESCO?

The MERIT consortium has undertaken a detailed analysis to map its curriculum to the ESCO framework. This mapping reveals a powerful alignment:

  • 332 Unique Skills: MERIT’s curriculum covers a wide range of ESCO skills, demonstrating its breadth and relevance to various job roles. These skills encompass areas such as secure software development, threat analysis, data management, and AI algorithm design.
  • 237 Unique Knowledge Items: Beyond specific skills, MERIT also fosters the development of essential knowledge areas defined by ESCO. These include cybersecurity fundamentals, data privacy regulations, ethical considerations in AI, and knowledge of IoT platforms and protocols.
  • 1539 Potential Occupations: The skills and knowledge gained through MERIT open doors to a diverse array of job opportunities. From Cybersecurity Analysts to AI Specialists to IoT Solution Architects, graduates are well-positioned to pursue fulfilling careers in Europe’s burgeoning digital economy.
