UPC Manresa Celebrates International Girls in ICT Day by Bringing Technology Closer to Secondary and High School Students
On Thursday 24 April, the TechLab at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya – Barcelona Tech (UPC) in Manresa, UPC Manresa, was filled with energy, curiosity, and female talent as it marked International Girls in ICT Day. The event brought together 4th-year ESO and 1st-year Batxillerat students (all undergraduates) from Cal Gravat and Pius Font i Quer high schools, aiming to break down stereotypes and spark interest in technology careers among young women.
The participants had the opportunity to engage hands-on with technologies such as sensors, electronics, and programming, solving tech challenges that tested their creativity and teamwork skills. In addition, reflective activities were held to analyze the role of women in the digital world, encouraging a critical and inspiring perspective.
One of the highlights of the morning was a practical workshop on the Internet of Things (IoT), led by Xènia Mata Fernández and Mercè Tormo Cortasa, both students of the Bachelor’s Degree in ICT Systems Engineering at UPC Manresa. The young participants learned how to remotely control electronic devices using instant messaging apps, discovering how this technology can be applied to everyday life.
At midday, Noelia Català, Computer Engineer from UPC and Project Manager in the Analytics and AI team at IThinkUPC, delivered a talk titled “How does ChatGPT’s brain work?”
International Girls in ICT Day is a global initiative promoted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) of the United Nations and is celebrated annually on the fourth Thursday of April in more than 160 countries. Its objective is to encourage girls to consider careers in information and communication technologies, helping to close the gender gap in the sector.
With this event, UPC Manresa reaffirms its commitment to promoting gender equality in the tech field and supporting young women who want to take an active role in shaping the future.
