The MERIT Project Showcased at the IoT Solutions World Congress 2025
From 13 to 15 May 2025, the IoT Solutions World Congress (IOTSWC), held jointly with the Barcelona Cybersecurity Congress (BCC) at Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via venue, brought together over 260 exhibitors from 30 countries and more than 100 national and international speakers. Both events underscored the strategic importance of artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity for businesses and industry, highlighting their role in ensuring a more secure digital future.
The congress featured the latest technological innovations in IoT, AI, and cybersecurity, aimed at accelerating the digital transformation of industry.
In this context, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya – BarcelonaTech (UPC), through CIT UPC, the UPC Technology Center, played a prominent role. At its stand, UPC showcased its technological capabilities, innovative projects, and tailored solutions addressing key challenges in today’s digital landscape.
Among the highlights was the MERIT project, presented alongside other pioneering initiatives in IoT, AI, 5G/6G, cybersecurity, sustainability, energy efficiency, eHealth, and digital transformation. Visitors could learn about MERIT through a dedicated QR-code brochure and a project leaflet.
Additional projects presented included:
● ELEGANT – 6G-OpenLab: A unique infrastructure as a real-world testbed for 6G applications
● 6G-EWOC: Artificial intelligence and 6G technologies to achieve safe, more interconnected mobility
● OCEAN: Application for Optimising Energy Consumption in High-Power Electrical Devices
● SaCoAV: Methods and Tools to Improve the Safety and Coordination of Autonomous Vehicles
● TenSyGrid: A Tool to Assess the Stability of Power Grids with High Levels of Renewable Energy
● PREVENTBot: An Autonomous Robotic System to Enhance Real-Time Crop Monitoring and Exploration
● MyGAIT: Smart insoles to improve the quality of life of Parkinson’s patients
● DISCOVER: A comprehensive solution based on AI and robotics to boost circularity in the construction sector
● EU.FFICIENT: Co-creation, the future of collaborative innovation in Europe
● INDUSAC: Improving the collaboration between business and academia
In addition, a prototype for AI-based odour recognition was on display. The system comprised three containers—one with coffee, one with cocoa, and one with air. A chip embedded in each lid enabled the system to automatically identify the scent.
Once again, the IoT Solutions World Congress confirmed its status as a key meeting point for the technological and industrial ecosystem, offering a prime opportunity to showcase UPC’s knowledge and innovation, including the MERIT project, to a global audience.
