Successful Online International Industry Engagement Workshop on IoT, organised by MERIT Project
On September 25, 2024, the MERIT project hosted its Online International Industry Engagement Workshop on the Internet of Things (IoT), drawing a total of 32 participants from across Europe. Representatives from SMEs, academia, and industry experts from countries such as Estonia, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, and Spain gathered virtually to discuss IoT innovations, share knowledge, and explore collaborative opportunities.
The workshop, organised as part of the MERIT project, offered a platform for IoT professionals to engage in thought-provoking discussions and exchange ideas on the latest trends and challenges in the sector. The event opened with a welcome session and introductions, setting the tone for a series of expert presentations and insightful discussions.
Highlights of the event included insightful presentations from a variety of organisations. TALTECH University (Estonia) kicked off the session with Raivo Sell’s discussion on Industrial IoT (IIoT), followed by Maccion (Spain), where Pau Feliu showcased the SMAC100 Series, a universal IoT device for managing future factories and warehouses. Octavic PTS (Romania), represented by Gabriel Dinu, provided an in-depth look at their Manufacturing Operations Management System, while Vegacomp Consulting SRL (Romania), presented by Cornel Bărbuț, shared insights into the challenges of international implementations of parking sensors and IoT technologies.
SAF Tehnika (Latvia), with Ernests Dreimanis, highlighted the Aranet IoT platform, showcasing its capabilities in IoT deployments. Aleix Llusà from UPC (Spain) explored the challenges and opportunities in cloud computing and distributed systems. BEIA Consult International SRL (Romania), represented by Ionel Zatreanu, introduced IoT products and services provided through their TELE-CONTACT cloud platform, while RMR Project Consortium (Germany), with Volker Krümpel, discussed the Raw Material Radar Project, focused on fostering responsible and fair artisanal small-scale mining in Western Africa.
These presentations set the stage for the collaborative discussion on IoT’s critical role in driving digital transformation across the EU, particularly for SMEs. Participants shared insights on how IoT can foster innovation, efficiency, and sustainability in various sectors.
The workshop concluded with a lively Q&A and networking session, fostering further collaboration among participants. Attendees were encouraged to continue the dialogue beyond the workshop, contributing to MERIT’s broader goal of creating a sustainable digital ecosystem in Europe.
The event’s success underscores MERIT’s commitment to advancing digital skills and fostering meaningful industry-academia collaborations. The workshop’s inclusive format enabled active engagement, with participants gaining valuable insights into cutting-edge IoT developments.
