Highlights from MERIT’s Online International Industry Engagement Workshop on IoT
On May 28, 2025, the MERIT project successfully hosted its Online International Industry Engagement Workshop on the Internet of Things (IoT), drawing 37 participants from across Europe. The two-hour event (14:00–16:00 CEST) brought together representatives from SMEs, higher education institutions, IoT experts, and researchers to explore practical applications of IoT and strengthen collaboration between academia and industry.
Centred around the theme “IoT in practice: Connecting machines, data and people”, the workshop spotlighted real-world use cases and current challenges in the field. Participants gained insights into cutting-edge IoT technologies, and contributed to conversations shaping the future of MERIT’s master’s programmes.
Ravi Raj from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya – BarcelonaTech (UPC) in Manresa, UPC Manresa, moderated the session, guiding an engaging and interactive exchange among participants.
The agenda began with a welcome session followed by a series of expert presentations. Radu Boncea from ICI Bucharest outlined major IoT trends and challenges. Lucian Alexa from NERDA presented a regional case study from Romania. Professor Raivo Sell from TalTech introduced an international IoT education platform aligned with Industry 5.0 principles. Jordi Bonet (UPC) discussed current implementation challenges, Iustina Ivanova (FBK) showcased TinyML applications for flowmeter detection, and Marta Millan (Asoindel) demonstrated smart factory solutions.
A collaborative discussion followed, allowing participants to reflect on shared challenges and explore potential avenues for future cooperation. The session closed with a forward-looking exchange of ideas and clear opportunities for continued collaboration.
