VILNIUS TECH Steps-out to Prepare Master-Level Engineers in Artificial Intelligence
In September 2024, the first students of MERIT project’s master’s study program “Engineering of Artificial Intelligence” will start their studies at VILNIUS TECH. Those students will start their 2-year journey towards their master’s degree. While all their studies will be oriented on mastering different areas of the artificial intelligence (AI) and gaining needed research, social, and personal skills to apply all the gained competencies in industry, research and personal life.
The Growing Demand for Artificial Intelligence Experts
AI is rapidly transforming various aspects of our lives, from self-driving cars to automated customer services. As businesses increasingly rely on AI, the demand for skilled AI engineers is on the rise. Therefore, the “Engineering of Artificial Intelligence” master’s program plays a significant role upskilling society with future advanced digital skills and has a high impact on the field.
Artificial intelligence engineering combines principles from computer science, software engineering, systems engineering, and human-centred design. Its goal is to develop AI systems tailored to specific tasks and processes, addressing human needs. AI engineers leverage computer programming, algorithms, neural networks, and other technologies to create AI applications and techniques.
The Master’s Program: Engineering of Artificial Intelligence
The “Engineering of Artificial Intelligence” master’s program focuses on preparing the next generation of AI specialists. Here are the key highlights of the study program content:
- Core Principles and Emerging Technologies: Students delve into the core principles of AI methods and technologies. They also explore the latest advancements in AI across various fields.
- Applied Dimension: The program emphasizes practical skills by mastering existing and emerging AI technologies. Students work with different data types (numeric, text, images, audio) and understand the nuances of AI infrastructure (distributed systems, big data, IoT). Ethical and legal considerations are also covered.
- Analytical Thinking and Competitiveness: Graduates gain analytical thinking skills and the ability to compete in a dynamic environment. They understand AI deeply and can create solutions based on research results.
Additional Opportunities for Students
Close to professional and very relevant study content, the students will have various additional possibilities:
- All specialty lectures will include presentations from industry and international partners. This will build a tighter relation with various players in the field of AI and will build a better experience in collaboration with them.
- The collaboration between different partners in AI area will be strengthened in annual MERIThON event. This event brings together the AI community of experts, offering students opportunities to find the best master thesis topics to work on, gain contacts and mentoring from different AI area partners, and test their competencies while applying it in development of solutions for the selected challenge.
- During the first two years of the study program (September 2024 to September 2026), students will be able to apply for dedicated scholarships. The aim of the scholarships is to increase the accessibility of master’s studies developing advanced digital skills for European citizens and promote the growth of higher-level skills, equality and diversity in computer science. The total budget of the scholarship fund is up to 100,000 euros.
- Mobility grants and excellence scholarships will be available for the students. Together with lectures from international partners, these opportunities should promote the practical application, publicity and research of advanced digital skills among European citizens, thereby fostering innovation and the activity and mobility of those who can create it.
Career Opportunities for Artificial Intelligence Engineers
The studies will allow students to choose either more research or industry oriented future path. In any case, the gained competencies in the study program are in align with the changing job position demand landscape. After the study completion the graduates will be able to work in different AI field. The main ones, which currently are on high demand are AI system architect, AI or machine learning engineer, data scientist, AI consultant, AI product manager and others.
The gained competencies in machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, speech processing, cloud computing and big data, reinforcement and federated learning, as well as the AI project management skills, will assure the graduates will be able to work in any sector, dealing with different type of data and even developing multi-model solutions for more advanced challenges.
In summary, AI engineers have a wide array of career paths, each with its unique challenges and opportunities. Despite in which sector the graduates will be working, directing to research rea or developing their own business, the AI competencies will be on demand. It is predicted that suitable application of advanced digital skills, especially AI competencies, will have a very high positive impact on an economical and technical development. Therefore, we hope, the MERIT project graduates will lead the Europe growth in AI area.
Possibilities for Personal Upskilling in Artificial Intelligence
The AI field is very fast growing. Without proper upskilling, the previously gained knowledge might be not relevant while developing modern AI solutions. VILNIUS TECH commits to update the study program, based on the development and trends in AI area. At the same time the graduates of the study program will have an opportunity to have individual courses for upskilling even after graduation of the study program. Such a possibility is open to any Europe citizen too. Everyone can apply to up to 10 positions to join the selected study program course and learn something new or update previously gained knowledge and competencies. The opportunities are available via short-term courses at VILNIUS TECH.
Conclusion
In summary, the “Engineering of Artificial Intelligence” master’s study program equips students with the skills needed to thrive in the AI-driven world. As Europe and Lithuania focus on AI breakthroughs, the demand for AI experts will continue to grow, while graduates of the study program will be ready to lead the change and contribute to the development of more intelligent and advanced future.
