Inspiring Young Women to Explore Digital Careers through Industrial IoT
Digital technologies are transforming the way we live, work and produce. From connected machines to data analytics, artificial intelligence and smart factories, the digital sector offers many professional opportunities for the next generation. However, making these opportunities visible and accessible to all remains a key challenge, especially when it comes to encouraging more girls and young women to consider careers in ICT.
Within the framework of the MERIT project, Marta Millán, Business Development Manager at ASOINDEL, participated in activities aimed at bringing technology closer to young students and strengthening the connection between education, industry and inclusion.
During the International Girls in ICT Day activity held at TechLab Manresa, Marta introduced students to the world of Industrial Internet of Things, explaining how machines can “speak” through data. The session presented Industrial IoT in a simple and engaging way: sensors collect information from machines, data is processed, and this information helps people understand what is happening in industrial processes.
Rather than focusing only on technology itself, the talk highlighted the people behind digital transformation. Through real examples from industry, students could see how connected machines, data analysis and remote monitoring can help improve products, make factories more efficient and safer, and support more sustainable industrial processes.
This approach is especially relevant to the MERIT project’s commitment to gender and inclusion in ICT. Activities such as Girls in ICT help challenge stereotypes and show that technology is not limited to a single type of profile. Digital careers can involve engineering, programming, electronics, data analysis, project management, business development, problem-solving and creativity.
Marta’s own professional path also helped illustrate this message. As a telecommunications and electronics engineer, she began her career in software engineering and later worked in R&D projects for production machinery before moving into project management and business development. Her experience shows that careers in technology are diverse and can evolve in many directions.
For young girls and students, this type of role model is essential. Seeing women actively working in industrial technology helps make digital careers more tangible and realistic. It also reinforces one of the key ideas of Digital MERIT: building digital capacity in Europe requires not only technical training, but also confidence, visibility and inclusive learning environments.
From Role Models to Real-World Innovation: ASOINDEL’s Contribution to MERIT
ASOINDEL also contributed to the project from its role as an industrial partner in the MERIT International Industry Engagement Workshop on Internet of Things 2026, held on 16 June. In this session, Marta presented ASOINDEL’s expertise in Industrial IoT and AI solutions for test and validation, showing how the company applies advanced technologies in real industrial contexts.
ASOINDEL’s work focuses on areas such as industrial connectivity, edge real-time data acquisition, cloud computing, database management, data analytics, predictive maintenance, remote monitoring and diagnostics, and condition monitoring of critical systems. These capabilities are directly linked to Industry 4.0 and demonstrate how IoT can help connect industrial processes with smart factory environments.
The workshop also provided an opportunity to share ASOINDEL’s experience in test and measurement systems, hardware-in-the-loop systems, automated test software platforms, embedded and FPGA solutions, and AI applied to battery testing. As an industrial partner, ASOINDEL helps bring practical knowledge into the Digital MERIT ecosystem, connecting academic learning with the real needs of companies and industry.
By participating in both inclusion-oriented activities and industry workshops, ASOINDEL contributes to two complementary goals of Digital MERIT: inspiring a more diverse generation of digital professionals and ensuring that digital education remains closely connected to industrial innovation.
Digital transformation needs talent, curiosity and different perspectives. Encouraging girls and young women to explore ICT careers is not only a matter of equality; it is also essential for building stronger, more innovative and more sustainable industries. Through initiatives like Girls in ICT and the MERIT IoT industry workshop, the project continues to create bridges between education, technology and the future of work.
